UCL art collections may be disposed.

A wide variety of artefacts that are being held at the University College London may be disposed of for good. They are wondering whether or not to keep everything, get rid of everything, or to develop standards for something to stay in collection. Most of all, they wonder if these items are all destroyed, would they come in handy later? They are considering getting rid of these bizare items questioning if some of them still represent a valuable relic or not.

Over One Third of Museum Directors Take Pay Cuts

Based on a survey of over 60 major art museums, at least one third of the museum directors are taking pay cuts, either in the form of salary cuts, removed bonuses, unpaid leave, of a reduction of benefits. Despite this, there have not been massive layoffs, and some directors, like Glenn Lowry, director of MOMA, still have a salary in excess of one million dollars.

To get the message across about green and environmental issues, Vaughn Bell's "Village Green" exhibit at Mass MoCA. These include actual greenhouses and plants as the heads of human figures. Bell hopes to create awareness and spread news of the urgency of environmental issues.“Approaching landscape from this perspective is a little bit bittersweet,” Bell says. “It’s sad but it’s humorous and maybe just a tiny bit hopeful."

Art Nouveau Exhibition Opens in Setagaya Museum, Japan

A large exhibition on Art Nouveau, an art movement that began in the early 1900s and helped place graphic design, product design, and typography in the forefront of the public eye, has just opened in the Setagaya Art Museum. The Setagaya, a leading art institution in Japan, is displaying works by the likes of Eugene Grassert and Alphonse Mucha. Nozomi Endo, the museum's curator, says that because Art Nouveau was influenced by the work of Japanese traditionalist artisans, the artwork of the movement is tied in with Japanese artistic culture and heritage.

Artist Michael Arcega Wins Art Commission

On Wednesday, the Visual Arts Committee voted in favor of Michael Arcega's "Victorian Street Posts." This was the result of a re-vote; originally, Brian Goggin's boat made of recycled bike parts had won in September. These pieces were submitted to the Valencia Streetscape improvement project, and many favored Goggin's idea because it represented the Valencia Street of old. The re-vote was cast, however, because the commissioners felt the sensor-activated LED lighting system would break down over time.

The New York City Ballet and Opera Finally Come Together

The renovation of the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center is the product of two famous arts uniting under the same roof. The Opera and Ballet made an infinite number of compromises and the new hall is scheduled to open November 5th. Although the Ballet is better off financially, the Opera is a very important, and exciting, part of the new center. The project cost about $107 million dollars. I am excited, the Ballet's season officially starts in November with the start of "The Nutcracker"
