Warhol's Soup Cans... in real life!

Even though famous artist Andy Warhol has been dead for twenty years, people seem to be continuously (if not increasingly) interested in his work. Campbell's Soup issued a limited edition soup label featuring the famous Warhol-style pop-art colours, which have become known as a symbol of wealth and power. A supermarket in a small rural Ohio town sold the cans for $2 each, but two years later a ritzy store in New York sold each individual can for $12. Around the same time, Warhol's prints of the famous soup cans sold for about $11.8 million. Is the interest in Andy Warhol being resurrected, or is it just a trend that will fade? Join discussion...

Andy Warhol, perhaps known most famously for his innovative pop art, also produced many lesser known album covers. In a new book entitled "Andy Warhol: The Record Covers, 1949-1987," Warhol's little known, but prolific work as an illustrator of album artwork is revealed. Fifty-one albums are catalogued, from the well known Velvet Underground & Nico cover, to more obscure, but still interesting jazz and folk covers. Written over the course of twelve years, the book is comprehensive and personal, relating Warhol's side career as an album artist with his acclaimed pop art. Join discussion...

The Church Gives Contemporary Art Its Blessing

Monsignor Gianfranco Ravasi, the new president of the Pontifical Council for Culture is on amission to revive a relationship between the Vatican and contemporary artists. “For a century now there has been a divorce between art and faith,” Ravasi said. “The basic idea is to return to a dialogue on biblical and religious themes between the Church and the great artists of our time—artists such as Bill Viola, Anish Kapoor, and Jannis Kounellis.” The first showing of new Vatican contemporary artworks will probably be in Venice. “Venice is a showcase for all the big countries in the world, and the Holy See would like to be there with them,” Ravasi said. “We are trying to get the best of international artists on our side, to create new works with a religious or spiritual theme.” Join discussion...
