A large exhibition on Art Nouveau, an art movement that began in the early 1900s and helped place graphic design, product design, and typography in the forefront of the public eye, has just opened in the Setagaya Art Museum. The Setagaya, a leading art institution in Japan, is displaying works by the likes of Eugene Grassert and Alphonse Mucha. Nozomi Endo, the museum's curator, says that because Art Nouveau was influenced by the work of Japanese traditionalist artisans, the artwork of the movement is tied in with Japanese artistic culture and heritage.
