Stolen Work Returned 30 Years Later

11 months, 3 weeks, 5 days, 18 hours agoIn 1978 a 14th century icon was stolen from a monastery in the city of Serres. It was estimated at a worth of one million euros. The work was cut in half to fit inside a suitcase. Some years later it came in to the possession of a Greek-born London shipper. It was identified as stolen in 2002 when this man offered to sell the piece to a museum in Athens. The incident was handed over to the ministery of culture, which tried desperatley to get it back. On November 6, it was finally returned to Greece after the British court ruled that it should be returned.
