In 1978 a 14th century icon was stolen from a monastery in the city of Serres. It was estimated at a worth of one million euros. The work was cut in half to fit inside a suitcase. Some years later it came in to the possession of a Greek-born London shipper. It was identified as stolen in 2002 when this man offered to sell the piece to a museum in Athens. The incident was handed over to the ministery of culture, which tried desperatley to get it back.
