Islamic Art Museum Doha

A new museum of Islamic art has been built in Doha, Qatar. About 800 pieces of artwork are on display. The time periods of the artwork range across 13 centuries. This creates a lot of diversity in the medium and style. The museum is different from the average museums because it also includes a garden and separate prayer rooms for men and women. This just goes to show how much of an affect religion has on daily life in this culture. (The article spends much time discussing the layout and interior design of the museum.) Join discussion...

Historic Loan Deal

In Madrid, the director of the Reina Sofia Museum, Manuel Borja-Villel, has made an agreement with Miguel Zugaza, that states 20 prints by Goya will go to the Reina Sofia, from the Prado, on a long term loan. This is controversial because the royal decree made in 1995 states that the Prado owns Spain's national art collection up to 1881 (Picasso's birth) and the Reina Sofia has art after 1881. The prints that are being loaned were made between 1799 and 1810 which elongates the spirit of the 1995 agreement and reorders a central theme of Spain's art historical conventions (theme that modernism started with Picasso). The work still belongs to the Prado, however, and is merely on loan. The Reina Sofia wanted the Goya's because the museum believes that Goya is a key part of understanding 20th century art. March 12 - May 25, the BMW Museum is taking place at Berlin's Pergamonmuseum. Also, works of art by Shigeru Ban, Daniel Libeskind, Zaha Hadid, and David Chipperfield are being presented at this museum. Berlin is the 6th place that the exhibit has taken place in the 21st century. It's being supported by the local Art Library. This exhibit provides the opportunity to see its conceptual design by all different artists. Until 2012, the exhibition will be touring a total number of 20 cities in Europe and North America. They expect this to be a popular exhibit because contemporary art is increasingly growing in the 21st century. Join discussion...
