Seeing Design as Intellectual Rather Than Just Practical
1 / 0
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/12/arts/12iht-design12.html
Constantin Boym and Laurene Leon Boym, designers in London, have taken everyday, mundane objects and cast them in a polymer that looks like bronze, focusing attention on the forms of ordinary objects and elevating them to a heroic, artistic status, forcing us to reevaluate the design that we encounter everyday in jugs, bottles, plates, and lamps, to name a few. "'Constantin and Laurene use design as a forum for exploring contemporary culture,' said ZoĆ« Ryan, design curator at the Art Institute of Chicago. 'Their singular approach illustrates the notion that design is not only about industry or formal and functional considerations, but also about ideas.'" Join discussion...

Design and Elastic Mind Exhibition
1 / 0
http://www.artdaily.com/index.asp?int_sec=2&int_new=23333
This is a exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It is all artist's (and scientist's) visions of what the future will hold. The lastest and greatest of the design world have come out to create a giant compilation of installation work, objects, and concepts that are cutting edge and futuristic. Most of it is based on human kind going in a revolutionary direction with increased technology and knowledge to the point that the show has turned out some really strange, creative, and thought-provoking ideas. There are piece ranging in size from nanotechnology (itty bitty teeny tiny) to life-sized designs and models. Since I can't see it, the next best thing is the internet...and this exhibition has the coolest website I've ever seen IN MY LIFE! Go here: www.moma.org/elasticmind and you will be amazed too. This incredible website which organizes all the work, links it together in groups, has descriptions and multiple photos of all and on many occaisions videos!!! was developed by Yugo Nakamura. New Design Show at MoMA Highlights Connection between Technology and Organic forms
2 / 1
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/22/arts/design/22elas.html?pa...
A design show that brings the high-tech world and nature's own designs together, called "Design and the Elastic Mind", is opening this weekend at New York's Museum of Modern Art. The works exhibited bring modern design and organic forms closer than one expects, proving that hard science and aesthetics are not mutually exclusive. In one piece displayed, an artist employed 40,000 industrious bees and a temporary mold to craft a honeycomb vase. Other artists explored using the growth patterns of microscopic organisms to model human cities. Pictured here is one artist's plan to use the latest advances in nanotechnology to imprint human sperm with miniature messages. Reading this review makes me wish MoMA was a little closer; this show is for anyone interested in environmentally-friendly design, mind-blowing uses of technology, or speculation about our future cities. Check it out! Join discussion...
