Surfie on spiritual wave to art prize
http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,26121834-...
Surfboard artist/designer Phillip George has created surfboards bearing intricate Islamic art for the Basil Sellers Art Prize. The contest urges contemporary artists to incorporate sport into their works of art. A few of the boards have the words "Insallah" inscribed upon them, which means "God willing". It would be a sin to place these boards in water or even step on them so they will never be used. They are displayed above the ground in a sanctified site with the boards facing Mecca. George, who is a veteran surfer from Bondi figured that designing the boards "Was a way of bringing the Middle East to Australia, and Australia to the Middle East".

Advanced geometry of Islamic art
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/6389157.stm
Recent studies of Islamic art show that by the 1200's, Islamic artists had an understanding of complex mathematics. As time passed, Islamic art began to get more and more sophisticated, using more and more complex mathematical concepts. These concepts are so advanced that they were not discovered by the rest of the world until quite recently. Medieval Islamic art displays concepts of quasicrystalline geometry, allowing a pattern to be extended indefinitely without repetition. Before this discovery it was thought that patterns in Islamic art were created using rulers and compasses. But now it can be seen, that Islamic art has always been advanced beyond the standards of its time.

This article is about the opening night of Qatar's Museum of Islamic Art. The building is created out of white stone in a ziggurat type style. The Museum opened last November and all of the famous people in the modern islamic art scene showed up, even the extremely elderly architect that designed the building. History of Islamic Art Exhibition Now on Display in U.A.E.
http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/n.php?n=islamic-history-art...
This exhibition is entitled "Islam: Faith and Worship". It premiered in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. in July of 2009. There are 161 art pieces in total, and they have been gathered from museums such as "Istanbul’s Topkapı Palace Museum and Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum". One of the most interesting things about this exhibit is the form in which the pieces are arranged, because they seem to tell a story about Islamic history throughout the display. The most important item included is a Kaaba curtain, which has not left the Topkapi Palace for 200 years. It is a fantastic addition to the exhibit, and is very important to the idea of Islamic history in art.
