Each year Arteamericas is held in Miami at the Miami Beach COnvention Center from March 27-30. This year it had 52 exhibitions which is down from last year. She says that even during normal circumstances collectors of Latin American art are usually unwilling to sell. Art Show Protests The Disappeared
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/07/arts/design/07barr.html?pa...
Several artists from Latin America joined their pieces into a show expressing the horror of terrorism committed by totalitarian regimes in Latin America in the later 20th century. The show includes a sculpture of bars with the face of the artist's father who disappeared when his son was 11. The face seems to fade in and out as viewers walk around the piece. Another emotional part of the gallery is a series of pictures of dental records from a mass grave of protesters in Venezuela. The final piece in the exhibit, stretching along the walls of the exit route, is a vast collection of photographs of couples who were expecting or who had children at the time they disappeared. The idea of the piece is to emphasize the amount of loss suffered as a result of the number of missing people.
