30th anniversary of the Miami Art Deco district's designation as a national historic place
http://www.prweb.com/releases/miamibeach/artdeco/prweb240800...
The Miami Design Preservation league is celebrating the 30th anniversary of it's success at saving Miami's art deco architecture from bulldozers, and getting the district designated on the National register of Historic Places. The preservation is celebrated because it was a crucial part of the South Beach renaissance. The art deco architecture has now become a popular backdrop and theme for cafés and hotels. Many of the old buildings were renovated and now serve as an important relic of Miami's latin history and culture.

Latin American Art Fair Has Small But Strong Following
http://artinfo.com/news/story/30993/at-latin-american-art-fa...
Each year Arteamericas is held in Miami at the Miami Beach COnvention Center from March 27-30. This year it had 52 exhibitions which is down from last year. However, a director counts the fact that Latin American art has not inflated as a blessing because there is less romm to fall. She says that even during normal circumstances collectors of Latin American art are usually unwilling to sell. An attendant to the show noted that the works this year seemed to be more traditional as opposed to contemporay and this dissapointed him. He is unsure if he will return next year.

Latin American Art Fair
http://http://www.artinfo.com/news/story/30993/at-latin-amer...
In Miami, collectors and dealers of Latin American art came together at the seventh edition of Arteamericas at the Miami Beach Convention Center. With this economy, the number of exhibitors was only 52, which was 70 fewer than the year before. Still, despite that, devoted buyers were still reassured with the modest number. The regional director for Christie's in South Florida said that is was a blessing that Latin American art didn't boom as Chinese art did. Prices of Latin American art have not been inflated by speculation therefore there isn't much distance to crash. She also says that most people who collect Latin American art tend to be motivated by passion and don't like to sell even in hard times. Many other dealers agreed with this. Several galleries held large displays of talented Latin American artists. It was also noted that there is growing interest in Cuban Art amongst Anglo collectors (perhaps due to the loosening of the state- controlled Cuban art). Miami galleries also did very well gaining artists from many foreign countries.

The Art Fair
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/06/arts/design/06base.html?_r...
The Art Fair is an event that will take place in various areas in Miami Beach, including over 200 galleries, exhibitions, and events. The art is everywhere. One piece literally spans from wall-to-wall, a text piece by Barbara Kruger, of two quotes, one by Goethe and one by Edgar Allen Poe. Distortion between reality and appearance makes it difficult to distinguish between the two-one sculpture by Frank Benson gives the illusion of being a fully functional liquid chocolate fountain, but instead is a painted sculpture of stainless steel. Based on these descriptions and the other ones in the article, this definitely looks like something worth checking out. That is, if you have the time to drive all the way to Miami over the weekend.
