At the National Museum, 15,000 or so pieces of art went missing during the chaos following the United States invasion in 2003. Around 6,000 artifacts have now been recovered and returend to the museum. However, the directors of the museum are not taking any chances: they have decided not to open the museum until maximum security is assured. They want to make sure that Baghdad and surrounding areas are safe enough for the museum to open.
