The Miami Design Preservation league is celebrating the 30th anniversary of it's success at saving Miami's art deco architecture from bulldozers, and getting the district designated on the National register of Historic Places. The preservation is celebrated because it was a crucial part of the South Beach renaissance. The art deco architecture has now become a popular backdrop and theme for cafés and hotels. An 8,000 signature petition and a 1,000 person protest prevented an Art Deco style building designed by Vassilis Kouremenos from being demolished. The building at the foot of Athen's Acropolis was to be demolished because it obstructed the view from a new museum's resturant window. The neighborhood residents as well as Greek architecture specialist Michalis Liapis agree that the demolished would be a "major error." Join discussion...
