Opera Costumes Used In a New Way
1 / 0
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/21/arts/design/21costumes.htm...
E.V. Day has spent the past couple months going through the warehouse where all of the New York Opera's unused costumes are kept. In fact, Day is best known for transforming articles of clothing into sculptures. The opera's manager was intrigued by her idea, and asked her to create an exhibit in the opera's promenade space. She has taken the clothing and created the opera characters from them, whether it be a pair of black gloves representing Don Giovanni or Mimi from "La Bohème." This is going to help make the connection between opera and the contemporary art world. Day uses fishing line to create a sculpture from the dresses and other clothes. "What helped me in imagining new forms for these costumes was all the evidence of life that I found inside them..." says Day, because she found makeup smudges, alterations, and dirt around the clothing, showing how they had been worn. Also, in additon to pieces made with specific outfits, she made ones with only hats, undergarments, and various other frilly theater ware. Join discussion...

Known for its collections of contemporary art far and wide, this museum keeps LA in league with New York in terms of which has the more significant art,a nd which is a better city for the arts. However, the museum is now facing debts, which could lead to its demise. There are also accusations that the museum has been using funds that were reserved for non-profit organizations. Many of its employees have resigned in recent years as they have foreseen this demise. Some say the museum has not been financially sound for years, due to the unorganizations of the executives. The museum is now looking into options concerning the future running of the museum that has been a prominent part of LA art culture. Join discussion...

Vatican approval of contemporary art
1 / 0
http://www.artnews.com/issues/article.asp?art_id=2556
This article described the past relationship between artists and the Vatican. It talked about how the two used to be very closely related, and the Vatican was known for sponsoring up and coming artists to create works of art, Particularly with Pope Urban VIII in 1629. For the past century, however, the two have not been as friendly. In fact there has been little interaction between the two. The Church wants to revive the old ways of being supportive of artists, like in the days of church patronage. The article talked about how one of the ways they plan on doing this is hosting contemporary art shows. One of the first is planned on being held in Venice. Also they are trying to acquire a property in which they could have their own permanent pavilion for the arts. While this is in the works, the article said that the Church is encouraging willing patrons to donate works so that the art collection of the Vatican can be updated, more contemporary, and in line with the times. According to the article, one of the major ways in which contemporary art is shaping the Church and the Vatican is through architecture, because many of the churches are being rebuilt and revamped. The article also discussed briefly some of the reasons for the fallout between artists and the Church. All in all I thought it was a very interesting article that successfully intertwined current events with their historical background in a way that didn't lose the reader in facts. Join discussion...
