Nancy Spero, an 83 year old American artist, died Sunday in Manhattan. She created art in a "figurative" form, meaning human figures, and used her creations of figures to represent social issues- especially political violence. Some of her art was created using mere paper as the medium. In addition to her Art, Spero was also a heavy feminine rights activist, and was an important member of Women Artists in Revolution based in New York City against "sexist and racist policies in museums". Much of her art revolved around these beliefs, and was focused mainly on women and their roles in society. Join discussion...

Andrew Wyeth, Painter, Dies at 91
2 / 0
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/17/arts/design/17wyeth.html?_...
This article covers the death of popular modern artist Andrew Wyeth. He died in his sleep, 91 years old. His art was revered as much as it was downtrodden. He "split public opinion as vigorously as, and probably even more so than, any other American painter including the other modern Andy, Warhol..." He became so popular that his art began to represent middle-class values which his own style of art, modernism, appeared to reject. His art continued to breach the boundaries and widen the rift between his supporters and his harsher critics, who claimed he made a mockery of realism. He "remained a polarizing figure even as the traditional distinction between 20th century between abstraction and avant-gardism on one hand and realism and conservatism on the other..." Nonetheless, he remained a talented artist, representing the sharp divide between different types of art fans and critics until his death on Friday. Join discussion...
