Trompe L'oeil Book Covers

At the Whitney Museum of American Art, artist Steve Wolfe has a exhibit of painting and drawings that are all copies of covers of books or old vinyl records. They are trompe l'oeil pieces, and, according to the author of this article, Ken Johnson, they are very realistic looking. As he says, "With creases, cracks, abrasions, tears and stains reproduced..., the paintings are curiously confounding."

Contradiction Remains Vital to Pakistan and Its Art

"Hanging Fire" is the first major exhibit of contemporary Pakistani art to be shown in America. The international showing means a lot to the people of Pakistan, says Melissa Chiu, who is the director of the Asia Society Museum, where the exhibit is being held. Artist are doing well in Pakistan, even though many foreigners believe that free expression is not allowed in the country. As Salima Hashmi, the curator of the show, says, "The contemporary artist symbolizes a strong hope for Pakistan."

Islamic Art Exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City is opening an exhibit on Islamic art today, September 23rd. The exhibit will feature manuscripts, miniatures, carpets, and architecture since 7th Century Middle East. This exhibit opens at 9:30 on the 23rd and will remain open through October, closing on Halloween.

Art Bridging Gap Between US and Cuba

In a move meant to help emend US-Cuban relations, a comprehensive group of US artists from New York have opened an exhibition of their work in Havana, Cuba. Titled "Chelsea visits Havana," the exhibit took about two and a half years to organize. It contains a wide variety of art, and is the largest exhibition of US art in Cuba since the momentous revolution of 1959. Sadly, due to continuing travel restrictions, many US artists exhibiting in Havana, including a relative of Yoko Ono, are unable to attend the event.

Babylon Depicted

Exhibits in both New York and London are both displaying exhibits depicting the legendary city of Babylon. These works feature different aspects of legends surrounding the ancient city, especially the famed Hanging Gardens.
The exhibit also contains works that could have actually been from the city of Babylon itself such as pieces of jewelry and bronze work.

MFA opens meditative exhibit of Japanese Zen art

The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is currently holding an exhibit featuring Japanese Buddhist art. The exhibit is called "Zen Mind/Zen Brush" and includes 35 hanging scrolls and screens. It has gotten positive reviews and seems to be an informative and aesthetically pleasing insight into anceint Japanese culture.

Bearing Witness War! Art Exibit

Robert Capa and his assistant Gerda Taro were able to flee Paris before Hitler's troops descended. With them, they took three boxes of negatives of photographs from the Spanish Civil War. These negatives had been lost to history for over 60 years. With these pictures as the main exhibit, they have created an art exhibit titled "Bearing Witness War!" depicting the heroic deeds and horrors of wars. In addition to these photographs Capa and Taro are including contemporary art from Iraq and Afghanistan. The exhibit is running until January at London's Barbican Centre.

Conceptual Art in Moscow from 1960 10 1990 now displayed.

A new exhibit in The Fundacion Juan March in Madrid opened, showing conceptual art from Moscow made in the years 1960 to 1990. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, art has not been very popular in Russia, and now is a chance for those suppressed artists to show their work. The exhibit was open from June 21 to September 14, 2008.

This cartoon has won several awards for its ingenuity and clever design, and thus to honor it, the C.A.M. is establishing a new exhibit dedicated to Troubletown.

Rhode Island Art Museum Styrofaom Exhibit
