'Blind art' exhibition launched
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/edinburgh_and_ea...
A new exhibition featuring the works of artists suffering from the loss of their vision will be opened this week in Scotland. The artists are all members of classes held by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), and are afflicted by varying degrees of sight loss. To create these works, the artists were forced to rely upon their imagination and memory, limitations which actually allowed them to express themselves to a greater degree, said a tutor at aiding with the classes. Their strong individualism can be seen in the variety of quality work produced. These limitations have also forced them to become "remarkably inventive" with their problem solving skills, the tutor added, and the artists usually only need the "obvious help" with locating their materials and getting set up.

David Beckham condoms: the latex thing in art
http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2009/oct/02/david-bec...
Much the the dismay of many of the more conservative museum-goers in Madrid, a new exhibiton is opening with the intention to display artwork that will also be featured on condom packages. One of the most awaited pieces sports a picture of a sleeping David Beckham, sports star and model. The exhibition is called Tears of Eros and will include 119 works. Nothing is finalized yet, but plans are going smoothly thus far. The museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza museum in Madrid, will be selling the condoms (that is, those with the works of art on them) in the gift shop. Baroness Thyssen is married to the founder of the museum and is supporting the project with all the enthusiasm of a beauty queen winning the grand prize (which she once did). "I don't see why anyone should be scandalised," she said the the press. "It is a way of bringing art and responsibility together." In fact, it is the hope of those in charge of the exhbition that having art on the packages will encourage people to buy, and subsequntly use, condoms. The museum believes that while perhaps it's not the first time condoms have been used in art, they can claim to be the first to use art to sell condoms. It is not certain when, or if, the exhibiton will open, but it promises to study "the close relationship between sexual desire and the death instinct" as well as other themes.

Warhol's Disturbing Paintings Exhibited
http://www.usatoday.com/travel/news/2008-03-17-warhol-works_...
Andy Warhol, who died in 1987, was best known for his paintings and screen-prints of images from popular culture, including celebrities and food. However, he also had an interest with violent death, especially after he was shot and wounded in his studio by Valerie Solanis in 1968. Many of his lesser-known works depict electric chairs, skulls, plane crashes, and drug paraphernalia. Some of these more disturbing works are now being displayed at Grand Rapids Art Studio, in Grand Rapids Michigan.

Art show inspired by disaster
http://www.thestar.co.uk/rotherham/Floods-inspire-art-exhibi...
The Cliffton Park museum is taking acceptance to a new level with the opening of a new art exhibit inspired by the terrible flooding of the last season. The show was displayed in a cafe so people could enjoy the art while eating lunch. It was a huge success; they sold three of the paintings and got lots of compliments on the exhibit. The paintings were done by Craig Longmuir. Craig is an art teacher at Silverdale school in Sheffield who takes great pride in his work and community. In an interview he said, "I like it when a work of art takes control of itself and I just allow it to finish. This for me is the magic and mystery of painting." After such harsh natural disasters as the floods, this kind of exhibition is exactly what a community needs to rebuild its morale.

This Friday, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is presenting a new exhibition 40 of some of the best Impressionist paintings from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. The exhibition will be called "Landscapes from the Land of Impressionism, and will include paintings like Monet's "The Doge's Palace at Venice," and Childe Hassam's "Poppies on the Isles of Shoals." The artists are pretty much half American and half French. These paintings are basically a loan from the Brooklyn Museum of Art- one of the oldest art museums in the country. Old art made new.

150 of "Sunshine Boy's" paintings at exhibition
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1670528,00....
L.M.W. Turner's supposed last words were "the Sun is God." Turner, or "Sunshine Boy" was an 18th century English painter and a master at capturing the essence of light. Early on, he meticulously painted watercolor with detail, but as he progressed as an artist his landscapes became more light-oriented and less detailed. Through his portrayal of the sun’s natural lighting, Turner proved that landscapes could equal historical events as art subjects. In his historical paintings, such as Snow Storm: Hannibal and His Troops Crossing the Alps, the landscape is just as important as the war heroes in the foreground. However, although he had supporters during his lifetime, he often received more opposition than praise. His critics admitted that he made light tangible, but complained that the work was not detailed enough. The new Turner exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington includes almost 150 of the Sunshine Boy’s paintings, clearly illustrating his use of light, his landscapes in a portrait time period, and his historical subjects. Viewers at this exhibition will witness Turner's artistic solar power in the nearly complete collection of his life's work!
