At the Courtauld Gallery in London, research has revealed that what was once thought to be a forgery by the notorious Han van Meegeren (1889-1947) is an actually an authentic Dutch Golden Age piece. The painting, called The Procuress, is now believed to be a 1622 scene from the Baburen brothel. There's posibility that the piece could have once hung in Vermeer's home. Join discussion...

Pollock Paintcan Prints: Forged or For Real?
1 / 0
http://artnews.com/issues/article.asp?art_id=2504
Jackson Pollock's finger print was found on a can of blue paint- or was it? Apparantly the can, said to be used by Pollock not long before his death, matches the finger print found on other works that have been attributed to him. But another expert had even an even more surprising idea- the fingerprint did indeed match Pollocks, but he believed that it had been put there by a rubber stamp. If this fingerprint really is a forgery, it will be only the second successful forgery ever, the only other involving a bank robbery in 1946 Bulgaria. "Fingerprint forgery is a plot device in fiction,” Pat Wertheim, criminalist in the Arizona Department of Public Safety and expert on fingerprint forgery and fabrication detection stated when brought on to the case. Pollock however, never actually had his fingerprints on record, so whether or not it is his may always be a mystery. Join discussion...

Possible Chagall Forgeries
2 / 0
http://www.cbc.ca/arts/artdesign/story/2008/09/11/chagall-fa...
Recently in Tokyo, the Bunkamura Museum of Art was informed by the Marc Chagall Committee of Paris that three of its paintings were quite possibly forgeries. The Marc Chagall Committee is an organization from Paris that studies the works of the great abstract artist Marc Chagall to try and successfully determine the authenticity of the pieces. This committee has recently found evidence to believe that three of the paintings at the Bunkamura Museum are not truly the works of Chagall. For this reason, the Japanese museum ultimately decided to remove the paintings from their exhibit and return them to the Moscow Museum of Art. Originally, the paintings had been borrowed by the Japanese museum from the Moscow Museum of Art. Join discussion...

Christian Parisot, and art historian and curator, was accused of faking 77 drawings of Jeanne Hébuterne. Jeanne, a deceased rather unknown artist, left her peices to one of her relatives Luc Prunet who then lent them to Parisot to use in the show. He then demanded to have them back when Parisot wanted to used them in a traveling show and accused Parisot of having forged some of the paintings. Christian Parisot claims they are all, infact, genuine Hébuterne peices. This matter is yet to be settled in court. Join discussion...
