David Beckham condoms: the latex thing in art
2 / 1
http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2009/oct/02/david-bec...
Much the the dismay of many of the more conservative museum-goers in Madrid, a new exhibiton is opening with the intention to display artwork that will also be featured on condom packages. One of the most awaited pieces sports a picture of a sleeping David Beckham, sports star and model. The exhibition is called Tears of Eros and will include 119 works. Nothing is finalized yet, but plans are going smoothly thus far. The museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza museum in Madrid, will be selling the condoms (that is, those with the works of art on them) in the gift shop. Baroness Thyssen is married to the founder of the museum and is supporting the project with all the enthusiasm of a beauty queen winning the grand prize (which she once did). "I don't see why anyone should be scandalised," she said the the press. "It is a way of bringing art and responsibility together." In fact, it is the hope of those in charge of the exhbition that having art on the packages will encourage people to buy, and subsequntly use, condoms. The museum believes that while perhaps it's not the first time condoms have been used in art, they can claim to be the first to use art to sell condoms. It is not certain when, or if, the exhibiton will open, but it promises to study "the close relationship between sexual desire and the death instinct" as well as other themes. Join discussion...

Non-visual Media?

http://www.fucares.com/expos_esp/jaume_pitarch2008.htm
Artist Jaime Pitarch has created an exhibition of art designed to adress the image culture of news today. He believes that images are now the focus of communication, but that they have been de-valued. The idea is to take away images from the media and see what is left. The exhibit includes newspaper pages without photos and puzzles of famous paintings whose images had been removed. Join discussion...

Prado Museum
2 / 1
http://http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2007/10/30/arts/2007...
Madrid's Prado Museum has seemingly been stuck in the past for the last century. But not anymore: the museum opened its brand new $ 219 million extension measuring 237,000 square feet last Wednesday, October 31 (If you're wondering, the extension was designed by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo and was a good $219 million). Before, the museum was cramped and haphazardly arranged. When new exhibitions were introduced, permanent paintings had to be moved and stored for the duration of the exhibit. The building lacked room and even a usable front entrance. Now, however, visitors can use a new front entrance, lecture hall, and cafe, and admire temporary exhibits that now have 15,000 square feet set aside just for them. The extension frees up space in the old building and allows plenty of new paintings, a number equal to half the museum's previous number of displayed art, to be displayed. Plus, from the outside, the new structure blends quietly into the surrounding neighborhood, effectively melding the art world and the ordinary one. Join discussion...
