Trompe L'oeil Book Covers
2 / 0
http://http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/20/arts/design/20wolfe...
At the Whitney Museum of American Art, artist Steve Wolfe has a exhibit of painting and drawings that are all copies of covers of books or old vinyl records. They are trompe l'oeil pieces, and, according to the author of this article, Ken Johnson, they are very realistic looking. As he says, "With creases, cracks, abrasions, tears and stains reproduced..., the paintings are curiously confounding." Join discussion...

Modern Controversy
1 / 0
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/03/arts/design/03moma.html?pa...
This article is about León Ferrari and Mira Schendel, two South American artists who have created several extrememly controversial pieces of art, often that depict famous religious scenes. For instance, Mr. Ferrari created the "Last Judgement," which depicts Michelangelo's version of it. However, Ferrari combines many modern techniques to create his art, which include Process Art, appropriation art and political provocation. However, they are mostly known for their impressive modern artistic techniques. For instance Schendel created a sculpture of hanging pieces of string that together look like rain falling, but also had religious aspects to it, such as religious quotes. They are particularly well known for their extremely modern artwork entitled "Tangled Alphabets," which combines many forms of art, including abstractism. The two have experimented with many different media, including plexiglass and rice paper (Japanese) and are well remembered for their original, slightly controversial, yet revolutionary type of art. Recently, the painting Taking of Christ, or the Kiss of Judas, has been found after it was stolen from the Museum of Western and Eastern Art in the Black Sea port of Odessa in July. The painting was reported to have been found near the Ministry of the Interior in Ukraine. Police officers believe that the thieves only managed to escape with the painting because they were able to bypass the alarm system by removing a window pane in the museum instead of breaking it. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/3507130/Dust-covered-...
The art world was shocked recently when a painting discovered in a British woman's attic was found to be a masterpiece by renowned painter John Everett Millais. The painting depicted Millais' love, a young woman named Effie Gray. Gray left her husband to marry Millais several years after this picture was painted. This portrait, valued at over £50,000 (over $77,000), was given to the woman who discovered it as a present for her ninth birthday from her mother. The mother apparently bought it at an art gallery, to which the painting had been sold by Millais. Join discussion...

LeWitt Wall Drawings Continued After Death
4 / 0
http://www.theartnewspaper.com/article.asp?id=16331
Artist Sol LeWitt designed hundreds a wall drawings that are now being installed at three-storey building on the campus of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA). Most of the retrospective, which spans 1968 to 2007, comes from the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut. The director of this gallery thought of this project with the artist in 2004. LeWitt gave a number of drawings to Yale. They used a building they renovated for the project, that the artist helped design before his death in 2007. A team of 65 artists and students spent six months executing the wall drawings. Before they started all they had were sheets of left behind instructions. Their efforts produced a walk-through timeline of LeWitt’s eye- and brain-teasing murals. Join discussion...

...And this is why I live in America...

Several works of Ukrainian performance artist Oleg Kulik were impounded recently by French police for the depiction of "pornographic images" in his work. The majority of paintings done by this artist contain images of him with assorted animals and other scarily inappropriate things. However, the part of this I find the creepiest of all is that the paintings were impounded not for the images of "zoophilia," but for the violent way in which it was done and shown to the public during assorted exhibitions throughout France. Stolen Paintings Inadvertently Sold At Public Auction
3 / 1
http://www.theartnewspaper.com/article.asp?id=16284
Fourteen recently stolen paintings were auctioned at Christie's King Street auction house. These paintings, part of a set of 69, had been stolen from an on-loan exhibition at Abbot Hall, a house turned museum, in 2006. For some reason they were never registered as stolen, and as such never caught when they were put for auction. It was only until after they were sold that they were discovered to be stolen. The miniatures will soon be returned to their owner who lent them out. Join discussion...

Figuratively Speaking
1 / 0
http://www.absolutearts.com/artsnews/2008/03/03/34911.html
This story explains a group of artists who took their own take on the most traditional subject of art: the human figure. Ever since the drawings of the cavemen, human figures were always the traditional subjects of arts. The artists behind a new exhibition, Figuratively Speaking, use their own approach on the human figure. They add heavy textures and chaotic strokes to the art, where they approach a harmony and create a painting. Join discussion...

9/11 memorial painting damaged by winter storm
1 / 0
http://www.wickedlocal.com/wareham/news/x1637671463
On February 21, 2008, a great memorial painting honoring those first to respond on September 11, 2001 who died trying to save lives was toppled over and cracked by high winds. The painting by Alexander Byron titled We Must Never Forget was found by the side of Cranberry Highway after the billboard it was displayed on fell over in a winter storm last week. The piece had been replaced recently because it had lost a lot of color and beauty due to sun and element exposure. The company, Mammoth Media had donated money for the restoration of it to resist the cold and wind coming off the bay. Unfortunately, even the restored piece could not stand up to the harsh winter winds. It was torn into three pieces after breaking free of its braces and locals are just hoping it doesn't have to be replaced again. Join discussion...
