How The Mona Lisa Nearly Came To A Watery End
4 / 0
http://www.theartnewspaper.com/article.asp?id=17322
Apparently, the Mona Lisa had left the Louvre for America and first arrived in the National Gallery of Art in 1963. Then, it had arrived in New York in the Metropolitan Museum. Dr. Hoving, a curator, had one day noticed the people in charge of the Mona Lisa running around the place with towels, and later that night it had been found that the sprinklers on the ceiling had managed to break the glass barrier and reach the painting. The museum declined to comment regarding the incident. Join discussion...

Planning a Romantic Getaway

The Maiden Heist, a new movie, will be coming out this fall. It describes how the new curator of a museum want to sell it's paintings in Europe in exchange for more contemporary work. Two guards of the museum, however, have strong feelings about certain paintings and do what they can to make sure the precious paintings aren't sold off, even if it means copying them and running off with the originals. United States Museums Decline
1 / 0
http://http://www.theartnewspaper.com/article.asp?id=16705
Museums in the US, including several of the famous and rich, are decaying in all aspects. The endowments have been dramatically cut down and recruitments for new workers have been haulted, in some museums workers are even being layed-off. Some of the museums going through this include the Kimbell Art Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Getty Trust. Hopefully they will be able to bounce back from these difficult times soon, but it is impossible to be completely sure. Join discussion...

1 / 0
http://www.theartnewspaper.com/article.asp?id=16452
Russia and Georgia recently had a war in August. Currently, they are complaining about the damage that each side has caused to the other. Georgia issued a 26-page report describing how Russia destroyed dozens of churches, monasteries, and museums. These include the 12th-century Ikorta Church, the 11th-century Bishop’s House in Nicosi, and a 7th-century monastery. Russia, however, stated that it had invaded Georgia to protect it's citizens living in the republic of South Ossetia, in which more than 11 historical sites have been destroyed by Georgia. Latin America’s Biennial At Risk
2 / 0
http://www.theartnewspaper.com/article.asp?id=16464
São Paulo Bienal is the most important, famous art exhibition in Latin America. However, throughout the last couple of years the Bienal has been rumored to have become corrupted. Some claim that the people running the Bienal are not properly using the funds provided to them by foundations, and visitors to the exhibition have drastically decreased in a short amount of time. Not only that, but the amount of artwork in the museum is also spiralling down. Could it be that this is due to money from funds not going to where it needs to go? Investigations are continuing to be made. Join discussion...

Contnuing Threats to Land Art
9 / 1
http://www.theartnewspaper.com/article.asp?id=16265
Land art is basically art that is made by human artists and is located in nature as opposed to gallaries and such. Sometimes the work is made out of nature, itself, and sometimes, the work is made out of human-made materials and just placed in nature. The dilemma is that threats are being posed to beautiful land art. One is the simple matter of erosion, and another, more dire threat, is the fact that companies are trying to carry out projects such as railroads and drilling for oil, which could majorly disturb several areas where there is Land Art. The Church's New Relationship With Art
1 / 0
http://artnews.com/issues/article.asp?art_id=2556¤t=Tr...
It has been realized that art and the church have gradually drifted apart. Gianfranco Ravasi, a biblical scholar, writer, and teacher, has decided to try and revive that relationship with newer, contemporary artists. This is gradually taking place, as architects are quickly stepping into their roles of building churches, and the churches are having shows that include the works of contemporary artists. Soon enough, the ties between the church and art will be successfully reestablished, and contemporary art depicting religious or spiritual ideas will not be shocking to see. Join discussion...
